As I often explain to my students when we first start school as children we learn our ABC's,
we do not know how to spell many words and our printing is in big block letters on the lovely
dotted double lined paper. As we move up a grade or two, we begin to learn to put the letter
together to form bigger words and also our writing style is refined to involve both upper case
and lower case letters. Next we learn to write on lined paper in a smaller fashion, as we are
again gaining more new vocabulary. Eventually our printing style is no longer sufficient, and
we begin to write in cursive, still expanding our vocabulary. Sooner or later most of us
develop our own style of handwriting, perhaps involving a bit of both elements or a particular
letter style. Then somewhere along the lines we learn that our writing skills in the real world
as we know it are often minimally necessary since the advent of the computer and we must
learn to type everything we know also (without looking at the keyboard). Riding is much the
same, while we learn the basics in the beginning, we must continually adjust and adapt in
new techniques, a wider range of knowledge, and the necessary finesse of rider aids and
physical involvement with the motion and emotions of the horse.
